Overall, the UK does not suffer from adverse weather on a regular basis. However, recently we have seen severe disruptions caused by snow, floods and wind creating HR related issues.
So, how do we manage this? To introduce and implement an Adverse Weather Policy to inform employees what happens in the event of adverse weather on a normal working day, to include:
- Staff reminders – keep an eye on the weather, time to travel, road conditions etc.
- Alternative arrangements for those who cannot travel.
- Payment to employees who cannot travel to their place of work.
- Lateness and absence notification procedure.
- What to do if the office is closed due to adverse weather.
- Agreeing short-notice annual leave.
- Make up the time.
- Closing the workplace early, to consider employees welfare and H&S.
- To consider a Flexible Working Policy during severe weather.
- In Scotland we should also consider the “Fair work charter – severe weather”.
